India defeated England in the 5th Test Day 3 by an innings and 64 runs, clinching the series 4-1.
India defeated England in the final Test, with Ravichandran Ashwin taking nine wickets. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scored centuries, while debutants Devdutt Padikkal, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sarfaraz Khan scored fifties. Ashwin's 100th Test was memorable, as England bowled out for 218 and 195 in their two innings.
INTRO
India won the Test by an innings and 64 runs in less than three days to take a 4-1 lead in the series. It needed 48.1 overs to knock England out in their second innings.
James Anderson became the first pacer in Test history to record 700 wickets for England to begin the day, but the jubilation soon faded. Exactly four hours, to be exact. Some would even argue for less since, once India's spinners, led by Ravichandran Ashwin, put England five down after the lunch break on the third day of the fifth Test in Dharamsala, it was clear what was going to happen. India won the Test match by an innings and 64 runs in less than three days, taking the series 4-1. It took 48.1 overs to knock England out in their second innings.
India's first Test victory in the Indian series was questionable, as England's record was rewritten after conceding a 190-run lead in the first innings.
Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami were absent from India. Virat Kohli was also absent from the series because of personal matters. My ankles kept giving way. KL Rahul sustained a quadriceps injury in the opening Test and did not play again in the series. The second Test was missed by Ravindra Jadeja because of a hamstring strain. In the midst of the third Test, Ravichandran Ashwin had to return home to take care of his sick mother. Ben Stokes's wildly energetic captaincy was giving the impression that Rohit Sharma's collected and composed manner was carefree, even lacking in ideas at times.
Day 3 Highlights of India vs England's Fifth Test
However, both India and Rohit retaliated. In each Test, he discovered heroes: here with Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, in Ranchi, Jasprit Bumrah in Vizag, him and Jadeja in Rajkot. And, dare we say it, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who set a record-breaking 712 runs in five Tests during the series.
Ashwin has set new records in his 100th Test
Referring back to the events of Saturday in Dharamsala, England quickly claimed the last two England wickets, but overcoming the 259-run deficit was always going to be extremely difficult.
The second innings for England proceeded quite quickly as the batsmen mostly tried to survive by attacking the Indian spinners, but they were unsuccessful once more.
Ben Stokes, the captain of England, looked pitiful after getting hit by Ashwin with a straighter shot right before lunch.
He spoke with Shubman Gill, who was stationed at first slip, for a short while and became distracted.
In addition to opening the bowling alongside Ashwin, Bumrah led the side in the middle as Rohit Sharma did not take the pitch because of a sore back.
In his 100th Test match, Ashwin defeated England's first player, Ben Duckett, once more. The southpaw, who had had difficulty containing Ashwin in the earlier games, attempted to counterattack by charging down the wicket, but he was unable to get close to the ball's pitch, which led to his bowled demise.
With some turn and bounce in the pitch, Ashwin had a leg slip in place for Zak Crawley. When Sarfaraz Khan was playing leg-slip, the England opener got an inside edge on the pads and deflected straight into his hands.
Ashwin's third victim was 19-year-old Ollie Pope, a tentative starter. Once again, an England batsman made a mistake in judgment by attempting an outrageous sweep off a delivery that was on the shorter side and went right to the arm.
Joining Joe Root in the middle, Jonny Bairstow (39 off 31), playing his 100th Test, moved straight up and attacked.
Bairstow used his spin to his advantage, hitting three massive sixes off Ashwin on the on side before Kuldeep Yadav declared him leg before wicket. Bairstow performed another boom-and-bust knock in the series.
After noon, Ashwin got rid of Ben Fokes to record the greatest five-wicket haul by an Indian ever 36. Then it was Jasprit Bumrah's chance to perform a magic trick. With two thunderbolt bowls, he sent Mark Wood and Tom Hartley back. Jadeja put a stunning end to Shoaib Bashir's stay.
When he made a last-ditch effort to reach his century, Root was the last wicket to fall—the only batter from England who attempted to take his time and manipulate the situation.
