Copilot for security: The first generative AI cybersecurity assistant is available from Microsoft.
Microsoft has launched Security Copilot following the launch of a Copilot component for its office suite earlier this month. Using OpenAI's most recent GPT-4 generative AI model, this cybersecurity assistant uses AI to help analysts better analyze data, process signals, and evaluate risk exposure.
Microsoft has launched Security Copilot following the launch of a Copilot component for its office suite earlier this month. Using OpenAI's most recent GPT-4 generative AI model, this cybersecurity assistant uses AI to help analysts better analyze data, process signals, and evaluate risk exposure.
The tool is nothing more than a straightforward prompt box that, like other AI-powered tools that are available for public preview, will display responses to questions about data breaches and other security issues.
The Security Copilot, for instance, can respond to your inquiry about a recent security breach by summarizing incidents and analyzing vulnerabilities.
The odds against cybersecurity professionals are still stacked today. "Vasu Jakkal, Microsoft Security's corporate vice president, stated, "They fight an asymmetric battle against relentless and sophisticated attackers too frequently."
"We are rebalancing the balance of power in our favor with Security Copilot. Jakkal continued, "Security Copilot is the one and only generative AI security product that enables defenders to move at the speed and scale of AI."
A private preview of Microsoft Security Copilot is currently available.
Why Microsoft Security Copilot
By providing security teams with summaries and "making sense of threat intelligence," Microsoft claims that Security Copilot "will simplify complexity and amplify the capabilities of security teams." This will enable corporate cybersecurity division employees to quickly identify malicious activity.
The company claims that it will also assist security teams in mitigating the problem by "correlating and summarizing data on attacks, prioritizing incidents, and recommending the best course of action."
How does Security Copilot work?
According to the company, Microsoft Security receives 65 trillion threat signals per day and is monitoring more than 50 ransomware gangs as well as 250 distinct nation-state cybercriminal organizations.
Microsoft said that the technology it uses prevents over 25 billion brute-forced attempts to steal passwords every second. In addition, the company's over 8,000 security professionals examine more security signals than nearly any other business.
According to the company, "on average, Microsoft's Security Operations Center analysts utilize over 100 different data sources."
How AI will help
Microsoft said that Security Copilot incorporates locally with Microsoft Security items, like Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Safeguard. It also bought RiskIQ and Miburo, which helped the company learn more about who is a threat.
The company stated, "Security Copilot will also continue to learn and improve to help ensure that security teams are operating with the most recent knowledge of attackers, their tactics, techniques, and procedures."
Microsoft Security executive vice president Charlie Bell stated that the company is "building a future where every defender is empowered with the tools and technologies necessary to make the world a safer place" with Security Copilot.
Job cuts in Microsoft Security
The announcement comes just one day after it was reported that Microsoft had laid off over 550 employees from its security division. A Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying that the most recent layoffs "are part of the effort to align our cost structure with our revenue that was announced in January."
