Gukesh lifted the title at the closing ceremony in Singapore on Friday, December 13, fulfilling his promise.
Gukesh had every reason to celebrate when he became one of the few Indians to win the World Chess Championship, joining the great Viswanathan Anand. Gukesh was in the stands when Magnus Carlsen defeated Anand in the Chennai title match back in 2013.

Gukesh stated during the press conference that returning the trophy to India was always his dream.
It was taken away from India eleven years ago. I thought it would be awesome to be inside the box when I was in the stands watching the game in 2013," Gukesh remarked.
“I wanted to be the one to bring the title back to India after Magnus won. There is nothing more significant in my life than this dream I had over a decade ago. Nothing compares to doing this for my family, my nation, and myself," Gukesh continued.
A tie-breaker would have been used to determine the winner of the 14th game between Gukesh and Ding, which was predicted to end in a draw. However, Ding erred in his 53rd move, leaving Gukesh just a step away from the momentous victory.
Gukesh received an incredible USD 1.3 million in prize money following his successful run at the world level. Anish Giri, Susan Polgar, Judit Polgar, and other well-known figures from the chess community also praised Gukesh for the incredible accomplishment.
