Microsoft intends to gradually switch Teams from Skype over the course of the following three months. The company has been pushing for this change since Teams was introduced, and in the blog post announcing Skype's retirement, it emphasised that while Teams offers more features, both platforms have many of the same features.

Microsoft says that in order to facilitate this transition, Skype users will be able to access Microsoft Teams for free on any compatible device using their existing login credentials. In essence, Skype users will be able to continue using features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and joining communities on Team for free, as well as making individual and group calls, sending messages, and sharing files.

"By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so you can quickly pick up where you left off," states Microsoft. "During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users and Skype users can do the same with Teams users" , it states.

Users have two options when switching from Skype to Teams. By using their current Skype login information, they can either switch to Microsoft Teams for free. All Skype contacts and chats will be automatically transferred to Teams once users have logged in, enabling them to continue their conversations exactly where they left off. Users can export their Skype data, including contacts, chats, and call history, if they would rather not migrate.

Furthermore, users have the option to use Skype in addition to Teams through May 5. To accomplish that, just download the Teams app, enter your existing Skype login information, and discover all of your contacts and chats are available for use.

Notably, Microsoft is dropping Skype Credit and calling subscriptions, among other paid services, for new users. The remaining Skype Credit will remain available for use by current subscribers until the conclusion of their subsequent renewal period. Additionally, Microsoft states that Skype Dial Pad will remain available to paid users via Teams or the Skype web portal after May 5.
