Glenn Maxwell is no longer playing cricket for his country. The 38-year-old Australian is also leaving the List A game and first-class cricket. His contract was extended until the 2027–2028 season, therefore he will be eligible to play for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL.

Maxwell had already stopped playing ODIs in June of last year, but he continued to play T20Is and participated in the 2026 short-format World Cup, where his team failed to advance past the group stages. The last game he ever played for Australia was against Oman in February, the tournament's last encounter. He didn't bat and took two wickets with the ball.

Maxwell stated, "We probably had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup," on the Final Word podcast. Additionally, it was somewhat open-ended. We chose to essentially leave the door open because there was no pressure from the management of the Australia team. There were a few upcoming series that looked forward to the future, and we witnessed that in Bangladesh, when guys were given the chance to perform exceptionally well."

Maxwell, who won the ODI World Cup thrice and scored the winning runs when Australia won the T20 World Cup in 2021, wished he could have played one final match for his country at home.

"I suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG. But I can completely understand the direction they're going with this squad. There's going to be a lot of change, I suppose, over the next 12 to 24 months with the Olympics coming up [in 2028], and they've got to make sure that they get their eyeballs on a few young guys coming through and making sure that they're getting exposed to international pressure that you probably can't always get from a BBL fixture."

In September, Maxwell guided Belfast Wolves to the final of the first European T20 Premier League while continuing to be involved in the franchise circuit. He played two games for Victoria in the One-Day Cup five days later.

Speaking with my teammates after Victoria's final one-day game and informing them that it would be my final game for the state was probably more difficult than I anticipated.Every time I've returned, I've had fantastic teammates and a lot of support from the state because I know how important they have been to my entire career.Yes, I did become a little teary-eyed when I spoke in front of the group, but it's definitely a time when I need to invest a little more time in my body to ensure that I can finish the few tournaments I have left in my career.

Maxwell had been tempted to try to prepare for England's next white-ball series, which includes a Twenty20 International in Melbourne.

Although I had the option, I was somewhat prepared to press the button to have my knee injected in order to ensure that I was prepared for the BBL.Therefore, there was a benefit in both directions. And I was able to begin reintroducing some time into my body as soon as the door was closed. To make sure I'm strong and prepared for the upcoming BBL, I'll need eight weeks of intense rehabilitation once more. Thus, it's most likely simply a little fairy tale that you sort of witness your idols and heroes go through. You begin to sort of allow your thoughts wander to that, and I doubt I would have requested it in any other format other than this one, which has felt almost like home to me for the past fifteen years.

Maxwell scored 2897 runs (and 51 wickets) with a strike rate of 154.42 while playing 130 Twenty20 Internationals for Australia. He shares the world record with Rohit Sharma with five hundreds in this format. In Test cricket, he received seven caps, the most recent in 2017. In Ranchi, he scored 339 runs with a top of 104 against India.
