On Tuesday, April 23, Ruturaj Gaikwad made history by being the first captain of CSK to hit 100 runs in the Indian Premier League. He achieved this feat during the team's match against LSG in Chennai. While the other CSK hitters found it difficult to get going in the evening, Ruturaj led from the front on the day. This season, the CSK captain had his sights set on a major victory, which he achieved in front of the fervent Chennai supporters at Chepauk.
LSG had won the toss and chosen to bowl first on what was a momentous day for CSK, as it was the anniversary of their first IPL match in Chepauk. Before Daryl Mitchell, who had replaced Rachin Ravindra, joined Ruturaj in the middle, CSK would lose Ajinkya Rahane early on. After the pair added 45 runs for the second wicket, Mitchell was dismissed by Yash Thakur. The captain of CSK would maintain equilibrium with Ravindra Jadeja, who likewise had difficulty gaining pace.
Once Ruturaj achieved his fifty in 28 balls, it was up to him to quicken the pace of the innings. Gaikwad batted well after reaching fifty and was able to get a boundary in the following few overs to maintain the momentum.
The moment Jadeja dropped for 16 off 19 balls, he would change his strategy. After a little lull, Gaikwad broke away with a huge six off Marcus Stoinis and continued to run fluently between the wickets. The captain of CSK would take Mohsin Khan for a six, taking him into the nineties. Yash Thakur hit a boundary to reach the landmark after he scored six more runs, taking him to 99.
With 11 boundaries and 3 sixes in his innings, Gaikwad would complete his century in 56 balls. As CSK score 210 in their 20 overs, their captain, who was at 108 from 60 balls, would remain unbeaten.
Ruturaj's knock in CSK vs. LSG broke records.
Apart from becoming the first CSK skipper to score a hundred, Ruturaj also became the Chennai batter with the most 50-plus scores, going past Faf du Plessis' record of 16. Ruturaj would also move into the second spot in the Orange Cap standings behind Virat Kohli as he went past SRH's Travis Head.
Having achieved his first IPL century during the 2021 season with CSK, this is his second one.
