  • This capability is being rolled out by Amazon for web browsers and iOS.
  • Soon, support will be made available for the Amazon Shopping app on Android devices.
  • Passkeys are thought to be a more practical and safe substitute for standard passwords.

Amazon is the next e-commerce site to roll out passkey compatibility for browsers and mobile shopping apps, following Google. Users will have a more convenient and safe way to access their Amazon accounts with this new passwordless system. According to the business, passkeys allow users to effortlessly unlock their devices using the same face, fingerprint, or PIN that they now use.

"Our goal is to provide customers with a seamless and secure Amazon experience," stated Dave Treadwell, senior vice president of e-commerce at Amazon. "Though passwords won't disappear anytime soon, this is an encouraging move in the right direction. Being an early adopter of this new authentication mechanism is something we are delighted about, as it helps us realize our goal of a passwordless, more secure internet.

A new way to access websites and apps without using standard passwords is provided by passkeys. They are seen to be a more convenient and safe option to passwords because they are difficult for hackers to guess or write down, making it harder for them to be compromised.

Users only need to unlock their device in order to utilize a passkey; this acts as evidence of the device's ownership and accessibility. Passkeys eliminate the necessity for memorizing special passwords or depending on obvious identifiers like names or birthdays.

Alternatively, users can use passkeys to access apps and websites in the same way that they unlock their devices—by using a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition. Additionally, passkeys improve our customers' overall security because they are less vulnerable to phishing attacks than traditional passwords and one-time codes sent via text message.

Passkeys are now available to Amazon users so they can access their accounts using browsers and the iOS Amazon Shopping app. Amazon promises that passkey functionality for the Android version of the Amazon Shopping app is in the works and will be available soon.
