Shubman Gill, the opener for Team India, retired with a serious injury after amassing 79 runs in the first semifinal match against New Zealand at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. This is a significant setback to the team. With his strong batting line, the leadoff man was certain to score more than 100 runs. However, Gill appeared to have pulled his hamstring in the innings' 23rd over as he stumbled and eventually left the pitch after taking a single.
If a wicket falls, though, the cricketer from Punjab will be permitted to bat later. The scenes in the middle showed that Rohit Sharma advised his opening partner to not take a chance on an injury and to leave if he wasn't feeling well. As the physio was examining Gill, it was Prasidh Krishna who relayed the information to his buddy.
Shubman Gill turned to go, his expression grimacing, not long after the message was delivered. He was batting so beautifully that it appeared he would make an incredible century. Now, Indian supporters will be hoping that he gets well quickly and goes back to the pitch to inflict more suffering on the bowlers from New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, gave the squad a fantastic start by scoring 47 runs off just 29 balls while hitting four sixes and as many fours. With Virat Kohli also producing an outstanding half-century, his 72nd in ODI cricket, the hosts haven't looked back after their opening stand of 71 runs in less than nine overs set the tone for the squad.
