INTRO

  • Afghanistan won the 2023 World Cup match against Pakistan by eight wickets.
  • Afghanistan has defeated Pakistan in eight ODIs for the first time ever.
  • Pakistan has now lost three straight World Cup 2023 matches.

Afghanistan continued their incredible run in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Monday at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, defeating Pakistan by an unprecedented eight wickets after Hashmatullah Shahidi's team hammered down the 283-run target.

Afghanistan has never defeated Pakistan in eight ODI matches, and this is also their most successful chase against the Men in Green. Afghanistan had earlier upset the reigning champions, England, in Delhi by defeating the Jos Buttler team by 69 runs.

Afghanistan lacked the finishing touches necessary to win the match; they had already lost seven One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Pakistan. All four of their batsmen, however, performed flawlessly in this game, leading to their highest-ever run-chase in a 50-over format.

Afghanistan had already defeated the reigning champions, England, in New Delhi, and this was their second victory. They are currently in sixth place in the mid-table rankings and have four points as a result.

Pakistan, on the other hand, is presently ranked fifth. Their chances of making it to the tournament's knockout stage, however, seem to be fading after three straight losses and the prospect of another setback against South Africa later this week. This might cause problems for the 1992 winners.

AFGHANISTAN SCRIPT HISTORY

Afghanistan, who needed 283 to defeat Pakistan in a historic match, got off to a great start thanks to a strong 130-run opening partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, both of whom hit their fifties. Pakistan's bowlers suffered from their team's poor fielding performance in the first 20 overs, even though Gurbaz and Zadran appeared reliable.

Hasan Ali, Babar Azam, and Shaheen Shah Afridi's lazy outfield performances disappointed Pakistan's wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan and team director Mickey Arthur. Players were unable to stop many balls from racing to the boundary, and the needless throws on the pitch caused extra boundaries to leak.

In the 22nd over, Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Gurbaz after he had scored 65 runs from 53 deliveries, bringing an abrupt end to the Afghanistan openers' comfortable progress. Rahmat Shah then began to build a solid partnership with Zadran by joining him at the crease.

Zadran, who came very close to reaching a century, was dismissed by Hasan Ali after making 87 runs off 113 balls. In order to lead his team home with six balls remaining, Rahmat then scored a spectacular fifty and added more than ninety runs for the third wicket alongside his captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi.

BABAR 75 LIFTS PAKISTAN TO 282

Earlier in their World Cup match against Afghanistan, Pakistan's captain Babar Azam scored a cool half-century, and some important contributions from the lower-order batsmen helped the team reach a total of 282 for seven. In a tough innings, opener Abdullah Shafique scored 58 runs off 75 balls, and captain Babar scored 74 runs. The return of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed, however, made sure that Pakistan reached a more respectable total than they otherwise might have.

Iftikhar Ahmed scored 40 runs in a flash with just 27 balls, and Shadab Khan scored 40 runs with 38 deliveries. Afghanistan fielded four spinners and expected a slow pitch, but the pitch was better suited for batting than they had thought. Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq, Pakistan's opening duo, took a measured approach and collaborated for 56 runs. In the eighth over, Shafique specifically targeted pacer Naveen-ul-Haq as the Pakistani pair reached the 50-run milestone. In the powerplay's first ten overs, spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman also proved to be costly.
