Kolkata earthquake: According to NCS, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the Bay of Bengal at 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday caused tremors in Kolkata and the surrounding areas.

Kolkata earthquake updates: Kolkata and several areas of West Bengal experienced tremors Tuesday morning after an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck the Bay of Bengal. The earthquake struck at 6:10 a.m., according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

An official from the India Meteorological Department told news agency PTI that the earthquake was detected in the Odisha region close to Puri. According to the official, the earthquake happened 91 kilometres below the surface of the Bay of Bengal.

He added that latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E were the recorded locations for the tremor.

Although the earthquake tremors briefly alarmed Kolkata residents, there have been no reports of damage or casualties as of yet.

A user on X wrote, "Earthquake Alert! In Kolkata, I got a Google Earthquake Alert at about 6:10 AM. The epicentre may be 175 kilometres from Orissa, according to reports. Did the tremors affect anyone else? awaiting formal verification. Keep yourself safe and vigilant!

Kolkata's location in Seismic Zone III puts it at a moderate risk of earthquakes. The city is occasionally shaken by tremors, though not as frequently as regions like Gujarat, the Himalayas, or Northeast India. Rather than faults directly beneath Kolkata, these typically originate from seismic activity in neighbouring areas like the Bay of Bengal, Nepal, or North-East India.

3.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Himachal's Mandi

At 8:42 a.m. An earthquake of moderate intensity occurred in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district on Sunday. Although no fatalities or property damage were reported, officials said that tremors were felt in some areas of the district.

The epicentre of the 3.7-magnitude earthquake was situated in the Mandi region at 31.48 degrees latitude and 76.95 degrees longitude, according to the MeT office.

According to the MeT office, the earthquake occurred 7 km below the surface of the Sundernagar region, close to Kiargi. Seismic zone 5, or high-damage risk zone, includes the Mandi district.
