  • After needing just 18.2 overs to chase 142, CSK beat RR by 5 wickets.
  • Simarjeet Singh and Ruturaj Gaikwad were excellent for the Super Kings.
  • The Super Kings improved their chances of making the playoffs by moving up to the third slot.

On a normally slow and sluggish Chepauk pitch, the Super Kings produced a clinical all-around performance against Rajasthan, winning the crucial battle of tactics in an IPL game on Sunday, May 12. After creating a pitch that resembled that of Channa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, fast bowler Simarjeet Singh led CSK in an outstanding bowling effort that saw them restrict the Royals to 141 and then chase down a difficult target with 10 balls and 5 wickets remaining

With 14 points from 13 games, CSK climbed to the 3 position in the IPL 2024 points standings. They share a point total with SunRisers, who are in fourth place and have one more game remaining. Rajasthan, on the other hand, who have 16 points from 12 games, lost the chance to guarantee their spot in the play-offs on Sunday.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad held one end, which proved to be quite effective for the Super Kings, while CSK depended on useful contributions from their top order. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell were quite effective during the powerplay, helping them score 56 runs in the first six overs. During the powerplay, Ruturaj faced only eight balls and scored only six runs. The Super Kings captain was astute, managing to provide strike to two powerful New Zealand players who attacked Rajasthan's new bowlers

Ruturaj Gaikwad won the match of tactics by staying undefeated at 42 off 41 balls, more than enough to get the team over the finish line and not have to worry about his strike rate. CSK did not have to take many risks following the impressive powerplay. Impact Player Sameer Riziv completed the victory with two boundaries in the 19th over, giving CSK victory with ten deliveries remaining.

In the middle overs, Shivam Dube was instrumental in controlling the asking rate. In the 14th over, he attacked R. Ashwin, just as it appeared that the Royals were applying pressure to the Super Kings. Before being out in the last over, Dube had a chance to target the hometown hero, hitting two boundaries and a six. At Chepauk, Dube made a vital 18 from just 11 balls in a match with narrow margins of victory.

The decision to declare Ravindra Jadeja out on 5 in the 16 over for 'obstructing the field' was controversial. Although there was a brief panic, Ruturaj and Rizivi made sure CSK crossed the finish line without incident.
