  • In 2024, Shreyas Iyer made his final appearance in the series against Sri Lanka.
  • The year 2024 was a wild ride for him, filled with many highs and lows.
  • Iyer performed admirably in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and SMAT.

The upcoming ODI series against England will mark the return of India batsman Shreyas Iyer to international cricket after a six-month hiatus. For Iyer, 2024 was a wild year because he was dropped from the Test team and later taken off the BCCI's centrally contracted player list for allegedly missing domestic cricket.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) after he swiftly recovered from his setbacks. The Mumbai team that won the Ranji Trophy in 2023–2024, the Irani Cup, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) in 2024–2025 included him as well. Iyer recently shared what he has learnt over the past year and how he overcame his setbacks by believing in himself.

"I feel like I've learnt a lot from this gap that I got from playing international cricket. Sincerely, I don't chase success; instead, I adhere to a particular routine and level of preparation that will help me succeed. For me, "me" is the champion. Iyer stated in a video released by the BCCI, "It's all in the mind, and I personally feel that you have no one to support you other than yourself."

The star batter emphasised the value of being present before making a comeback and disclosed that the England series would be his only focus.

"I'm thankful that I've won so many titles in 2024, but the more I practise the things I occasionally repeat, the more I'll eventually get the desired outcome. I'm going to concentrate on the ODI series right now, match by match, because I love to be in the moment," he continued.

Iyer's brilliant form in domestic cricket

August 2024 marked Iyer's most recent appearance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. His performance in the rubber, however, was unmemorable as he only managed to score 38 runs at an average of 12.66 from three innings. In the 2024–25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he swiftly recovered to his previous level of play, scoring 325 runs in five innings and two hundreds.

Additionally, he scored 345 runs at an average of 49.28 in eight innings in SMAT. The right-handed batter will therefore try to maintain his current form against England in order to accumulate some runs before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
