This Was Not a Minor Fault": Expert Breaks Silence on Air India Flight 171 Crash
This Was Not a Minor Fault

A top aviation expert and a pilot himself told on Thursday that serious pilots in India who are closely following the events surrounding the investigation into the crash of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner are unhappy with the entire situation because they believe there is a bias towards blaming the pilots.

Captain Sam Thomas, the head of the Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India), stated that the absence of any certified expert in the report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and conjecture are the two factors that are troubling serious specialists who have been following the investigation.

"As for speculation, we don't mind it when the media does it. We think that speculative reporting is a valuable component of investigative journalism." But we don't like pilots or so-called experts who come on board and make assumptions," Mr. Thomas stated.

They declared it a bird hit on the first day. They claimed that the jet was overloaded on day two. They said something different on the third day. Why you called them on day four is what we are protesting. Mr. Thomas stated, "You called them on days five and six until they implied that the captain had done this with the intention of taking his own life, which is completely untrue.

He claimed that the report appeared to be "a dictated sort of letter" and that they do not think it "is completely Indian controlled." "You also made that public in the middle of the night. Even the complete form of FADEC is incorrect. Additionally, you are unable to accurately determine [pilot] Sumit's licence issuing date.

How can I anticipate that you will read the complete report? Those three lines are all I want to see. And at someone's request, you selectively released one line. Who said what to whom is now unknown. And there is a tonality to a discourse. These two aren't dating on Tinder. Therefore, kindly exercise responsibility," Mr. Thomas urged.

He stated that instead of hiring non-technical individuals with non-civilian backgrounds, they would like to review the whole report or the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) to shed further insight. Mr. Thomas stated that the Wall Street Journal had probably been "fed that information" on an article that seemed to cast doubt on the pilot's actions.

It's our fault, too. No, they are not to blame. I would have sat down with everyone of those NTSB and Boeing investigators and handed them a piece of paper. I would have told them to sign it, saying that anything that leaves this room would go through me and no one else. You should leave if you are unable to keep it secret," Mr. Thomas stated.

[But] they have so carefully crafted the story that they will perfect the pilot regardless of the evidence I present. That's what they've done already. That is the opinion of half the globe, while the other half believes Indian pilots are idiots. The poor inquiry and the poor manner in which things have been handled in India are to blame for this.

He made reference to the MCAS-related crashes in the Boeing 737 MAX debate. "... what about the first crash with the 737 Max? Had you been conscious when you woke up, you would have exclaimed, "Hey, I need something to set my aeroplane." OK. You did not speak. Regretfully, the accident in Ethiopia occurred.

Fortunately, we were all far less bright than the Ethiopians. After conducting an internal study, they discovered that MCAS, a renegade system that causes aeroplane crashes, was unavoidable. Therefore, there are numerous vested interests rather than simply one.

Let's examine beyond the OEM or an investigative agency. There is something to gain for everyone who is lying.
