2023 After losing in the US Open in 2023, Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Davis Cup Finals. In the 2023 US Open semifinal match against Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the Spanish tennis pro was defeated.
In the absence of Rafael Nadal and owing to the health issues of Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut, Alcaraz was scheduled to serve as the team's captain. However, Alcaraz has chosen to withdraw from the competition.
Alcaraz said that he needed some time to recuperate from his US Open failure and warned against dwelling on it for too long. He emphasised the value of using these encounters as opportunities to grow as a player. Alcaraz will be replaced in the starting lineup by players like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Roberto Bautista Agut, Marcel Granollers, and Albert Ramos-Vinolas as a result of his absence.
For their forthcoming Davis Cup matches, Albert Ramos will take Alcaraz's position, according to a statement from the Spanish Tennis Federation.
Carlos Alcaraz is replaced by Albert Ramos on the Spanish tennis team for this week's Davis Cup Finals group stage matches in Valencia, from September 12 to 17. The squad, which will operate under the direction of the new captain David Ferrer on Saturday, will welcome the 35-year-old seasoned tennis player from Barcelona this afternoon.
"Ramos had previously been picked up for the Final 8 in Malaga the previous year. He has made it to the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro and at the ATP Challenger in Parma in 2023, in addition to reaching the final in Gstaad and the semifinals in Cordoba. He has competed in five Davis Cup qualifiers, winning six and losing only two," the statement continued.
Besides world number six Jannik Sinner and Italy's Matteo Berrettini, Alcaraz is not the only well-known player to bow out of the Davis Cup.
