AFG vs BAN: What can happen to Gulbadin Naib in light of T20 World Cup cheating allegations?
T20 World Cup 2024: Gulbadin Naib allegedly pretended to have a hamstring injury in order to get extra time during Afghanistan vs. Bangladesh's rain-affected match. Will the all-round player face consequences for his inefficient use of time? The ICC rules state this.
INTRO
- Gulbadin Naib faced criticism for inflating an injury worry.
- Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs in the match.
- If Gulabadin Naib is found guilty of his actions, the ICC may punish him.
Gulbadin Naib was the subject of criticism, while Afghanistan made history by making it to the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinals. On Thursday, June 25, during Afghanistan's match against Bangladesh at Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vicent, his apparent injury came under examination. He was charged with inflating an injury sustained during the rain-shortened game. Gulbadin received backlash for his time-wasting stunts, and others questioned the veracity of his injury. The event occurred during the match, right before a rain break, with Bangladesh at 81 for 7, 2 runs behind the DLS score.
Coach Jonathan Trott of Afghanistan told the players to slow down a little when it started to rain, and soon after, the cameras turned to Naib, who was seen tripping and clutching his hamstring. As he continued to yell at the all-rounder from the boundary rope, even captain Rashid Khan was not pleased.

Can Gulbadin be penalised by ICC?
A segment of social media followers, along with the Afghan players themselves, enjoyed making fun of Gulbadin's antics. Gulbadin appeared unfazed as he enthusiastically danced to commemorate Afghanistan's victory. The Afghanistan all-rounder may have to pay a price for his mischievous behavior.
As to the ICC Code of Conduct, wasting time is classified as either a Level One or Level Two infraction, carrying a maximum penalty of two suspension points or a fine equivalent to 100% of the player's match fee. Naib may therefore be subject to punishment if the umpires report the occurrence to the match referee as a time-wasting measure.
What do ICC rules say?
If Gulbadin Naib is found guilty by the ICC after reviewing this incident, severe consequences may be imposed on him. The umpire may punish the bowler or captain during the match if a fielder impedes play, as per ICC regulations. As part of the penalty, the batting team will receive an extra five runs, and the ball will be ruled dead. Following the game, the referee would look into what happened. Action can be taken against the bowler, team, or captain if the investigation reveals wrongdoing.
But players have often used similar time-wasting strategies, particularly in Test cricket. In order to avoid batting an additional over or two towards the close of the day's play, batters frequently take their time.
In addition, Rashid justified Gulbadin's contentious injury by arguing that it was insignificant.
All right, I believe he got a cramp. What happened to him is unknown to me. I have no idea what's happening on social media. That said, it is irrelevant. Just an on-field injury, that's all. We simply left the pitch after the rain arrived without losing any overs. Nothing about it significantly altered the course of the game. When we returned to the pitch in five minutes, not much had changed. I only needed some time to heal as it was an injury, "explained Rashid.
On June 26, Wednesday, Afghanistan will play South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.
