India has said that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's remarks on Indian Muslims are "unacceptable.". Posting on X birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, the Iranian leader equated Indian Muslims with those living in Gaza and talked about their suffering.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, "We strongly condemn the remarks made by the Supreme Leader of Iran regarding minorities in India."

"These are unacceptable and ill-informed. Before making any observations about other countries, countries making comments concerning minorities are urged to review their own records," New Delhi has stressed.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated in his post on X, which was formerly Twitter, today: "We cannot consider ourselves to be Muslims if we are oblivious to the suffering that a Muslim is enduring in #Myanmar, #Gaza, #India, or any other place."

He said, "The enemies of Islam have always tried to make us indifferent to our common identity as the Islamic Ummah."

The remarks came amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel—a situation that has caused uneasiness in New Delhi.

India and both nations have close relations. Given that West Asia provides 80% of India's energy, strategic relations with Israel are growing, particularly in the areas of security and defense.

The largest crude supplier in West Asia is Teheran. Along with hopes for the Chabahar port, New Delhi and Teheran are also concerned about terrorism from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

India and Israel are linked by terror as well; both countries suffered from the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, which is why India supported Israel during the initial hours of the Hamas terror attacks on October 7.
