International Yoga Day 2024: Every year, on June 21, the whole world comes together to celebrate International Yoga Day. This global phenomenon recognises the ancient Indian practice of yoga and its profound impact on physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj", meaning "to join" or "to unite", and signifies the philosophy of bringing harmony among the mind, body and spirit. It is more than just physical postures, as it is a holistic approach to health that integrates breathing exercises, meditation, and ethical principles.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, "The word 'yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to connect' or 'to unite'. According to Yoga scriptures, the practice of Yoga connects individual consciousness with universal consciousness, signifying perfect harmony between mind and body, man and nature."
International Yoga Day 2024: Why is International Yoga Day celebrated?
International Yoga Day is celebrated to raise awareness around the world about the many benefits of yoga. It is a day to recognize the ancient Indian practice that focuses on mental and physical well-being.
The reasons behind celebrating Yoga Day are detailed below:
-Ancient tradition: Yoga is a practice that originated in India thousands of years ago. Celebrating it acknowledges its historical significance.
-Holistic health: Yoga goes beyond physical exercise. It incorporates mental and spiritual aspects, and promotes a sense of overall well-being.
-Global appeal: Yoga has grown immensely in popularity across the world in recent times. This day celebrates its universal acceptance.
In September 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). During his speech, he proposed to celebrate International Yoga Day annually.
PM Modi highlighted the wellness benefits of yoga and its holistic approach to health. He called 21 June the ideal date for the celebration as it holds significance in many cultures and is the day of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
The proposal gained momentum and the UN passed a resolution in December 2014 officially declaring 21 June as International Yoga Day. A record-breaking 175 Member States supported the proposal.
The UN noted: “The draft resolution for the establishment of an International Yoga Day was proposed by India and supported by a record 175 Member States. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, where he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action. a holistic approach, which is valuable for our health and well-being. Yoga is a means of achieving a sense of unity with oneself, the world, and nature; it is not merely a physical kind of exercise.
“It is important for individuals and populations to make healthy choices and follow lifestyles that promote good health,” the resolution states. “The World Health Organization remarked, "In this regard, it also urges its Member States to help reduce physical inactivity among their citizens."
